F.A.Q

How can I print a receipt for my taxes?

Log in to your SI Play account and click "Order History" on the righthand side of the screen. You'll see a "Receipt" button that will take you where you need to go.

When are practices and games held?

Each team has one 60 minute weeknight practice each week and one 90 minute game on Saturday mornings or early afternoons.

When does the season start and end?

Practices generally start in the last week of October and the first game is typically help on the first Saturday of November. The season ends in mid-March.

Can we request to be on a specific coach's team?

You may not request to be on a specific coach's team unless you are a member of their coaching staff.

When will we find out our practice and game schedule?

We start making the teams in mid-October and meet with our coaches shortly after that. You will receive an email from Sports Illustrated Play at that time to let you know that you have been assigned to a team.

My child hasn't played basketball before, can they still register?

Of course! As a non-competitive league, our main priority is helping kids have fun and grow as individuals. Our skilled volunteer coaches will help your child learn the game no matter which division they play in, and they are guaranteed the same amount of court time as everyone else - no matter how many baskets they get in a game.

How are teams made?

We use the information given to us during the registration process to create as many teams of around 10 players each. We do our best to balance the average player height, experience in the sport and age. Players grow and improve their skills during the season, but we strive to ensure that each team starts off at the same level so that games are fun for everyone.

Will my practices always be at the same time and place?

Yes, generally. Sometimes we receive cancellations from the gyms, so we do our best to relocate your practice to a different gym in St. Albert while keeping it at the same or a similar time.

Can I request to be on the same team as another player?

Each season we receive hundreds of special requests that we cannot possibly grant without sacrificing the balance of our teams, so we are no longer accepting player pairing requests. We see this as a great opportunity for family members and players to meet new friends and neighbours of our community, establishing friendships that may last for years to come.

What if my child decides not to play after we register?

If you cancel your registration before October 1st, you will receive a full refund minus $10.00 to cover the league's online registration fees. After that time the jerseys have been ordered, and you will receive a refund of your registration fee minus $30.00.

Why did you change the divisions of play from age-based to grade-based?

We have been using an age-based system for 40 years, but recently we decided to change to keep peer groups together. For example, in a grade 5 classroom, most of the children would be in Division 2 but some of them would still be in Division 1 under our age-based system.

Where do my registration fees go?

Your $100 fee gets your child 44 hours* of equal court-time basketball under the supervision of enthusiastic coaches and referees, a game t-shirt, year-end trophy, and membership in Basketball Alberta. It also covers behind the scene items such as insurance, referee stipends, and the online registration system. For a more detailed breakdown, see our governance page.

Through the use of school gyms and a volunteer board of directors, we are able to provide excellent value in this increasingly popular sport.

What do I do if the gym is not open on Saturday morning for my game?

Double check your schedule to make sure you are at the correct gym. If you are at the right gym and it looks like things are running late, just sit tight. There is a board member present at each school to meet security when they open the gym, and they have already taken the appropriate measures to get your game back on schedule.
